SUMMARY:National Public Lands Day in Bankhead National Forest
DESCRIPTION:National Public Lands Day\n\nNational Public Lands Day is a great opportunity for families\, individuals\, scout troops\, church groups\, youth groups\, volunteer organizations anyone who cares about public lands and wants to spend a day outside doing something good for our Bankhead National Forest.\n\n\n\nHave you ever wondered what the view is like from the top of the Forest Service fire tower on Highway 33? Before the Central Fire Tower was closed to the public many years ago\, it was a thrill to climb to the top and get the big-picture view of the forest. As a special treat for our volunteers on National Public Lands Day\, the fire tower will once again be open for a climb to the top! Be sure to bring your camera for this rare opportunity. And if you have a photo of yourself on the old fire tower before it was closed\, bring it to the picnic! Wild South is providing the picnic for volunteers.\n\n\n\nAfter signing up\, meet at the Black Warrior Work Center on Highway 33 about 10 miles south of downtown Moulton. From here we will divide into groups and begin picking up trash along designated sections of Highway 33\, the Wilderness Parkway.\nIn an effort to continue conservation on public lands\, Wild South has adopted five miles of highway that borders the Sipsey Wilderness in the Bankhead National Forest. In a partnership with PALS and ALDOT (People Against a Littered State and Alabama Department of Transportation\, respectively)\, Wild South has agreed to maintain a litter free five miles. We will be working within this five mile section.\n\n\n\nAt lunchtime\, we will return to the Work Center and fire tower for our picnic.\n\nAll the necessary equipment (trash grabbers\, buckets\, trash bags) and personal safety gear will be provided.\n\nBring drinking water\, snack\, work gloves for picking up trash. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.\n\nDogs are not allowed.\n\nNational Public Lands Day\, held annually\, is the nation's largest single-day volunteer event for public lands and is coordinated by the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF). Sign up today to show you care!\n\nWild South's Helping Hands volunteer program is funded by individual donors and by a matching grant from The National Forest Foundation.
