![]() Where is Lawrence County? Lawrence County is located in Northwest Alabama. The Tennessee River's Wheeler Lake forms the county's northern border while Bankhead National Forest occupies the southern fourth of the county. Lawrence County is bounded by Colbert and Franklin Counties to the west, Morgan and Cullman Counties to the east and Winston County to the south. Lauderdale and Limestone Counties are across the Tennessee River to the north. The County encompasses approximately 693 square miles. The city of Moulton is the County Seat and is located just south of the geographic center of the county. While the northern part of the county is relatively flat, the further south you go, you ascend a plateau across the central part of the county and rise into the mountains of the Bankhead National Forest. Medical Facilities Lawrence County Medical Center, located in Moulton, provides the county and surrounding areas with outstanding healthcare in a community setting. Town Creek has a Family Practice Center. Lawrence County has several options for elderly care and rehabilitative services ranging from specialized therapies, to home health services and Hospice care. Moulton is currently building a long-term care facility for the mentally ill across from the Medical Center's ER. Lawrence County is centrally located to numerous other hospitals in surrounding counties. Parkway Medical Center and Decatur General Hospital are in Morgan County. Cullman Regional Medical Center is in Cullman County. Colbert County is home to the Helen Keller Hospital and Medical Center Shoals. Across the northern part of the county is U.S. 72 (Ala. 20). It's 4-laned and runs East-West connecting the Shoals area with Decatur. Ala. 157 cuts diagonally through the heart of Lawrence county.It is now 4 lanes and runs from the Shoals, through Moulton to Cullman, where it connects to I-65. Ala. 24 runs East-West through Moulton to connect Russellville and Decatur with another 4-laned highway. A new limited access Memphis-to-Atlanta Super Highway is in the design stages. The proposed plan calls for it to parallel U.S. 72 in the Northern part of Lawrence County. Public transit is available through the Lawrence County Public Transportaion Department. It runs several sized vans and buses which provide subsidized transportation to senior citizens and those with special needs. It also provides contract transportaion for the public. Lawrence County Airport is located in the north end of the county. It has 2 runways (a 5,000ft and 3,500ft) that are paved and have state-of-the-art lighting systems. Tennessee Valley Aero is a full-service fixed base operator for the airport. It offers commercial pilot services, flight instruction, aircraft rental, ground freight handling, an FAA testing faciltiy and courtesy car services - including transportation to the nearby Valley Landing Golf Course. This area is also served by the Huntsville International Airport The airport has an air charter service and an inter-modal freight terminal. Northwest Alabama Regional Airport just west of Lawrence County in Muscle Shoals, has commuter air services and general aviation. A main rail line for Norfolk-Southern Railway runs east-west through northern Lawrence County. The line goes through Hillsboro, Courtland and Town Creek.
