Outdoor Recreation When it comes to outdoor fun, Lawrence County really means business! Thousands of visitors every year already experience Lawrence County's natural treasures -- Wheeler Lake on the Tennessee River to the north and the William E. Bankhead National Forest to the south. The Bankhead National Forest & Sipsey Wilderness Area spans 180,000 acres and nearly a third of Lawrence County. Outdoor enthusiasts from across the nation come to explore deep canyons, towering cliffs and hidden waterfalls that have inspired nature photographers for years. Thousands of hunters answer their call of the wild with a trek through the Black Warrior Wildlife Management Area, 98,000 acres within the Bankhead designated for special hunting events. Anglers love casting in Wilson and Wheeler Lakes - a combined 83,030 acres of fishermen paradise! Golfing is also an adventure started on the Robert Trent Jones Trail and continued into Lawrence County with stops to play at Deer Run, lying in the shadows of the majestic Bankhead National Forest moutains. Deer Run was recently honored by Golf Digest's "Best Places to Play." With its 3-star rating based on overall golf experience, value for the money, standard of service, conditioning of the course and normal pace of play for 18 holes, Deer Run is a good value, the people are friendly and the views are very pretty. Valley Landing is a "fly in and play" golf course. It is in its fourth year and continues to improve. The course sits on 180 acres of woods and open fairways that provide a solid challenge for golfers of all skill levels. From hunting, trail-blazing, bird watching and Bald Eagle roosts of the fall and winter to camping, canoeing, kiyaking, fishing, boating, swimming, golfing, hiking, horseback riding, more bird watching, and cycling during the spring and summer - Lawrence County boasts seasons full of outdoor activities.
